Maine Infantry

Finding information about a civil war captain.?
I know this may be a remote possibility, but I am looking for information GW Edwards on the captain of the company G. I have some very little information to go yet. I think that was part of 16 Regiment, Maine Volunteer Infantry – Although I'm not entirely positive. I checked several different databases / books / etc, and have not had much luck. If anyone has any advice on where I could learn, I would be grateful.
These deposits Definitive Information: Maine State Archives: http://www.state.me.us/sos/arc/research/homepage.html NARA / NPRC Military Records File: This will give you all the information, including those who participated in the battles, where he attended and where he was released, etc. 180.html http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/standard-form- There is also a complete set of documents online through the Ohio State University (the Wolverine me shudder to type). I have found very useful. No list of all the soldiers gone, but once you've confirmed your ancestor's unit, this will help you understand what you experienced. The state also has a Maine http://ehistory.osu.edu/uscw/library/or/list3.cfm official historian. Once you confirm that is where your ancestor is assigned can help you gather information.

All’s for the Best: The Civil War Reminiscences and Letters of Daniel W. Sawtelle, Eighth Maine Volunteer Infantry $10.98 At the outbreak of the Civil War, Daniel Withum Sawtelle was a young man working on his family’s farm in the north woods of Maine. The Republican son of a Democrat, he initially took little notice of a war he assumed would be over almost as soon as it started. As the conflict wore on, however, he began to disagree vehemently with his father about the future of the nation. Finally, in February 1862, he enlisted in the Eighth Maine Infantry. Fifty years later, Sawtelle drew on his wartime correspondence to compile a memoir of his experience. All’s for the Best combines Sawtelle’s memoir with the most interesting of his letters, which were principally written to his sister Sophronia. His account supplies firsthand descriptions of several important campaigns, from Petersburg — where Sawtelle volunteered as a sharpshooter — to Appomattox, as well as several obscure skirmishes. Perhaps the greatest contribution of Sawtelle’s writings, however, is the light they shed on the racial attitudes of Union soldiers. In late March 1863, the Eighth Maine occupied Jacksonville, Florida, becoming one of the first all-white units to serve, albeit briefly, with an African American regiment. Although Sawtelle became an increasingly ardent abolitionist, he was not immune to prejudice and expressed decidedly mixed feelings about African Americans. Sawtelle’s military service left him utterly fascinated with the South, and his memoir records his impressions of everything from the flora and fauna to the food and cultures (both white and black) he encountered there. While serving out his last term of enlistment, he remained in the region for nine months following the war’s end, and his account of theoccupation that preceded Reconstruction makes for compelling reading. With its careful descriptions and wide-ranging observations, All’s for the Best is a valuable contribution to the eyewitness literature of the Civil War. |

Civil War Regiments from Maine, 1861-1865 $18.22 "Civil War Regiments from Maine, 1861-1865," details the histories of the regiments and batteries raised in Maine during the Civil War. Each entry provides the names of the senior officers, number of enlistments, number of deaths in battle and from other causes. The state of Maine enlisted 65,000 men to fight for the Army and l 5,000 for the Navy, raising 32 infantry, 2 cavalry, 1 heavy artillery, and 1 sharpshooter regiments, and 7 light artillery batteries. Many regiments earned fame and glory but none more than the Twentieth Maine Infantry. The Twentieth defended the extreme left of the Union line on Little Round Top during the battle of Gettysburg from a Confederate attack that, if successful, could have swept the entire Union army from the field. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, author of this volume, served with the Twentieth, rising from Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General and Brevet Major General. He was wounded six times during the war and had the honor of receiving the first Confederate surrenders at Appomattox Court House. The First Maine Heavy Artillery suffered the highest number of casualties in a single battle when 210 of its rank fell dead or mortally wounded charging Petersburg’s defenses. The soldiers from Maine, according Fox’s "Regimental Losses," suffered an 18.9% casualty rate, including deaths by disease, the highest percentage of loss for any Union state during the war. Losses in battle were 3,184 and death from disease and other causes were 6,214. Thirteen regiments from Maine are counted among Fox’s 300 Fighting Regiments and can be found in "Regimental Losses of the American Civil War" (also available in paperback from eBooksOnDisk.com). |
